I’m not sure if I dress Madelyn like me or if I dress her in things I wish I could wear.  This black and white outfit is an absolute new fave of mine!  When I spotted these VonBon Apparel black and white harem pants ON SALE, I had to snatch a pair up.  They are, of course, the perfect pants to pair with her West + Wind tees.  I think because of our W+W kids collection I’ve been really drawn to black and white for her.  I do infuse colour into her outfits too…she’s a kid after all.  The matching headband and her cute kitty shoes keep her outfit playful and not too grown up looking.  She’s only two, and I want her to stay little as long as possible.

I’m a big fan of reusable decorations.  This adorable bunting was from Maddie’s birthday party in November.  Why buy disposable decor when something like this can be used over and over again? Mitani is another local Vancouver, BC label.  Loads of local love in this post!

I’m not really sure on where I stand on Valentine’s Day.  Is it ok to love and loathe a holiday all at the same time?

That V-Day usually only celebrates romantic love when all love should be celebrated.
So much pink. I like a pop here and there but there but I don’t want to decorate my whole house in it or wear it head to toe.
The pressure to have an uber romantic and over complicated date.  I love a good date night, but simple means more to me.
I’m really not good at the mushy love stuff. My husband and I see eye to eye on this.

Planning little things to celebrate my loves. My sweet girl included, of course!
Any excuse to have fresh pretty flowers in the house…I do this anyway though.
Candy and chocolate!!!!!!
Drinking bubbly in sweat pants!

If you do have a date night planned and want to create a pretty outfit without being overly girly, take a style cue from Paris Street Style.  Word on the fashion street is that berets on making a come back.  {So glad I kept mine and didn’t get rid of them in my great closet purge.}  This classic camel coloured beret with a real classic outfit….I’m thinking jeans and a white button up shirt…along with a fab scarf makes a perfect, effortless look.  An outfit like this can take you from a dinner out, to coffee, to a fabulous Galentine’s Day celebration.  Simply match your shoe, jewelry, and makeup style to coordinate with your plans.

Winter Skincare

Winter Skincare can be a tricky game and vary depending on the climate where you live.  When I lived in the Prairies, my ongoing issue was dry skin.  I can still have some dry skin tendencies, but there is much more humidity out here on the West Coast.  I often get asked by friends and readers if I’ve tried any new products lately that I’m loving, so I figured I’d share the products I use and love with you all.

Mereadesso All in One moisturizer ~ Awesome to travel with since it’s both a day & night cream.  It’s packed with botanicals and antioxidants.  It absorbs quickly so I can apply my makeup right away.  This all-in-one also works as a serum, primer and eye cream!  It’s a pretty dang fantastic product.
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum ~ I’ve been using this one for years.  It just works.
Coconut Oil ~ It’s not sexy, but it works. I keep a jar in my vanity.  I use it for shaving my legs {apply before you shave}, eye makeup removal {apply it to a cotton wipe}, and of course to moisturize those real dry patches of skin.

Almay makeup remover wipes ~ The perfect first step for cleansing your face at the end of the day.  Also good on nights where you’re just to tired to do the whole routine.
Philosophy Purity Cleanser ~ This cleanser is light and gentle on your skin.  It’s an awesome all in one cleanser, so it will also remove your makeup and help moisturize your skin.
Dermalogica Daily Microexfoliant ~ This is another long time favourite.  It is a gentle rice based exfoliant with no artificial fragrances or colour.

Blemish Control:
Estee Lauder Clear Difference ~ I’m fortunate that I don’t get to many breakouts, but when I do, this is my zit zapper!

Rodan + Fields ~ I only recently tried out the microderm abrasion paste and moisturizing serum from Rodan+ Fields.  It left my skin uber soft.  My complexion was soft and pretty too.  My favourite thing was that is was super quick and easy to use.  I totally thought it was going to be a whole ordeal, but not at all.  Just a couple minutes and my skin was gorge!

Obviously hydration is a huge part of skincare.  I try to drink as much water as I can, but in the Winter I love something warm to sip on so I tend to drink a ton of herbal tea.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually shared a recipe on the site before.  I’ve been trying to bake more lately.  We even bought a fancy new Kitchen Aid mixer.   I have been making cookies, granola bars, a first time fail attempt at bread, and muffins.  I have been playing with recipes and working on finding healthier alternative ingredients.  I’m all about cutting back on sugar {my addiction}, and making easy snacks with wholesome ingredients that my whole family can eat.  I had a Snapchat request for this recipe, so I thought I would share it with you all.

1  1/2 cups spelt flour
1 cup of quick oats
1/3 cup flaxmeal
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg beaten
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup brown rice syrup
2/3 cup mashed banana {* I eyeballed this, and definitely didn’t use enough banana.  They were a bit dry, so more banana next time.}
1/3 cup of dark chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 400F
Stir oatmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, & salt
Mix egg, milk, rice syrup, & mashed banana together well
Add this mixture to the dry ingredients
Gently stir until moistened
Fill greased muffin tins (I like to use coconut oil)
Bake for 13-18 minutes, or until golden brown.

Makes 12 large muffins

When I eat them, I warm them up a bit, split them in half and drizzle a bit of honey on them.  So delish!

Yesterday I took a bit of time to do some online shopping.  I have been purging my closet have been really honest about what I actually wear.  I’m trying to purchase less, but purchase well.  Buying well means finding things that no only fit well, but are also items I will actually wear over and over again.  While I was shopping I was kinda bummed that there is either teeny tiny stuff or plus sized items.  Love that there is such a wide variety of plus sized clothing now, but I’ve tried it before and it doesn’t fit me.  I’m in this weird bubble of sizing that can’t wear “skinny” clothes, but plus size doesn’t work either.  On one of the sites I was on, I was checking out there size guide and it said that their size 12/14 US was an XXXL.  What???  I’m not vain about the whole size thing, but what?  I looked around a bit longer and soon found that nothing really seemed to be available in that size.  {This was so a “Mean Girls” shopping moment.  LOL! }  This is one of the reasons I buy most of my pants at Old Navy.  I have searched…and nothing.

I think one of the reasons, I’ve been going a bit more classic with my wardrobe is because I’m finding it harder all the time to find clothes I love and that fit and flatter.  Getting dressed as a curvy girl takes more thought.  When I was younger and slimmer, getting dressed was a breeze.  Everything looked cute.  I have some left over baby tummy, hips and thick legs, and I guess I’m a bit booby now too.  These are complaints, just what I’m working with. Oh, and then there’s the whole refusing to be anything but really comfortable. Also, what is up with so many of the shopping sites for “curvy gals” being more costumey than fashiony?  I don’t want to dress like a 50’s pinup girl.  I just want to look like me.   If any of you curvy gals have any tips of places you like to shop, please share.  I always love a good recommend.  This vintage leopard print blouse was a great find.  I bought it at an Electric Lady Vintage popup. I love when vintage clothes are curated for me.

Update on my wardrobe purge…Yesterday, I had a giant box of clothes picked up for donation.  If felt great to downsize more.  I’ve got a pile of stuff I’d like to consign as well.
